Types of Pool and Spa Facilities

​EMD is required by California codes and regulations to inspect swimming pool and spa facilities that may be open to the general public or operate at facilities such as community pools, apartment buildings, schools, condominium complexes, hotels/motels, or fitness gyms. EMD does not inspect pools and spas in private single-family homes.

Pool & Spa Facilities are grouped into categories based on their function. Many facilities have more than one active category. For example, many apartment buildings have both a Swimming Pool - sometimes more than one - and a Spa. You will find the inspection history for all active categories listed with each facility.

Swimming Pool

Swimming Pool at a commercial facility in Sacramento County. The definition in the California Code of Regulations is an artificial basin, chamber or tank used, or intended to be used, for public swimming, diving, or recreational bathing, but does not include baths where the main purpose is the cleaning of the body, nor individual therapeutic tubs.

Spa

Spa at a commercial facility in Sacramento County. The definition in the California Code of Regulations is a pool, not used under medical supervision that contains water of elevated temperature, and incorporates a water jet system, an aeration system or a combination of the two systems.

Swimming Pool - Single Re-Circulating System

Two or more swimming pools that are served by a single re-circulation pump and filtration system. This configuration is not common.

Wading Pool

Wading Pool at a commercial facility in Sacramento County. The definition in the California Code of Regulations is an artificial basin, chamber or tank used, or intended to be used, for wading by small children and having a maximum depth of not more than 46 centimeters (18 inches) at the deepest point, nor more than 30 cm (12 in) at the side walls.

Spray grounds typically consist of water spray or jet devices located in an area accessible to the public. They are intended to provide individuals with a means to play in the water without going into a swimming pool.
