About EMD

​The mission of the Sacramento County Environmental Management Department is to protect public health and the environment by ensuring compliance with environmental regulations. In order to achieve compliance, EMD provides Sacramento County businesses and residents with education, training, inspection and enforcement.

The Environmental Management Department consists of two (2) primary divisions:

  • Environmental Health includes the following programs: Retail Food, Public Pool & Spa (Recreational Health), Plan Review, Tobacco Education, Employee Housing, Detention Facilities, Noise Control, Waste Tire, Medical Waste, Body Art, Edible Food Recovery, and Childhood Lead Illness Investigation & Prevention.
  • Environmental ​Compliance includes the following programs: Regulatory Compliance/CUPA and Solid Waste programs, Storm Water Compliance, Small Water Systems, Cross-Connection, Land Use, Septic Systems (Liquid Waste), Medical Waste, Wells, Recycled Water, and Site Assessment & Mitigation.​

EMD is a part of  Sacramento County Social Services Agency, which provides local, state and federally mandated services and programs to the citizens of the seven cities and the unincorporated areas of the Sacramento County.
